Event: Visit to Brougham Castle

Brougham Castle stands near the site of a Roman fort, guarding a strategic river crossing.  It was founded in the early 13th century by an agent of King John.  After falling into decay after 1617, Brougham was restored by Lady Anne Clifford.  Fit visitors can climb the spiral stairs to the top of the central keep for panoramic views over the Eden Valley.  Inside, there is an exhibition about Lady Anne’s remarkable life.

A tour of the Castle will be given courtesy of English Heritage.

Costs: entry is free for English Heritage members and children accompanying them; tickets bought on the day are £9 for adults and £8.10 for seniors; tickets bought online in advance are £7.65 for adults and £6.88 for seniors.  Children’s tickets are generally 50% of adult tickets.

Instructions: Meet at the castle at 11am, there is no parking on site, but road side parking is possible close to the entrance.
