Event: The Black Death in the North – Penrith and Eden 1597-98

Dick O’Brien’s talk is named ‘The Black Death in the North – Penrith and Eden 1597-8’. He will tell us about the origins of this deadly disease and how its arrival in this country on flea-infested ships, some of which docked on the north west coast, had caused a large number of deaths in our region. He is also well informed and talks about some uprisings in England that were known as ‘The Pilgrimage of Grace’ in 1536-1537. They occurred in Cumberland and Westmorland, as part of an English Catholic revolt which had happened mainly in the north of the country.
