We have done it, 5,000 records in the Archives Catalogue system!!!
It has taken a while to get to this point, but it has been great to see the variety of items that we have available for research. Since the last update, there has been the addition of a new category, ART, as there seemed to be more in our collection than expected and covers all forms of artwork including drawings, sketches and paintings. Some have been moved from other categories, so that there are 63 items now in this section.
Cuttings has had the most new additions, with an extra 200, while many are from 1967, they range from 1755 to 2019. The all important Registers collection has had the Sedbergh, Garsdale and Dent marriages added up to 1799, along with Quaker marriages and BMD extracts for several houses.
There are 120 more wills, mostly for the Guy family, but also some ‘H’ names, while the tithe records for Lenacre and Marthwaite have now been added. In the Deeds collection, there are 150 new entries covering 430 years, 1518-1946. A new item in the Listings category are land tax records, these give information on the owner and occupier of a property from around 1764-1831, and the entries cover the area of Soolbank.
Other items of interest are the Sedbergh Parish Magazine for 1876 and 1877 (under Books), business adverts from 1936, 1953 and 1962 (see General Items) and various ephemera, including sales brochures, receipts, posters and programmes. Also added are 100 more Dent photos and 25 more Howgill slides.
All this brings the grand total of our most important categories to the following numbers: 1300 photos/slides, 570 deeds, 640 wills, 440 tithes and 800 cuttings/articles. While all of this represents a huge amount of history, there is still lots more to be added!
